In addition to our talented nationally acclaimed acts on the bill, we will be recreating the old Midwestern tradition of the Community Band lead by Crawford family member Conductor Rod Wagoner as they play some of the old Crawford Band standards before the show. There will be a different community band in each town and we are taking entries now!

THE COLORFUL HISTORY OF CRAWFORD'S COMEDIANS

Crawford’s Comedians began in Nevada, Missouri in 1897 when Band Leader Professor B.R. Crawford put his four sons Emil (clarinet) Talmadge (Dutch)(trombone), Raymond (bass) and Rush (coronet) into his orchestra before they were out of their knee pants. They were young, but they wee good and as their popularity grew, they took their act on the road under canvas. On the way across America they collected a colorful assortment of talented performers. Their program evolved into the largest traveling tent show in the country, home to vaudevillian style acts and sketch comedy, musical interludes, dramas and contests. At the height of their popularity they even enjoyed their own train car.

The show split into different territories and although the Southern show closed in 1914, the Northern Show continued under the leader ship of my Great Grandfather, Rush Wagner Crawford. Rush's brother-in-law Dave Stump could play the fiddle behind his head and also organized the famous "Harp Orchestra" starring sister Matie. Youngest brother, Wagner, joined the show on tuba in 1926.

The death of harpist sister Matie and the Crash of '29 closed the tent show, but the band continued to preform their legendary Saturday night concerts in the Nevada town square until the 1950's with their renditions of "Sioux City Sue," "Five Minutes More," "Gal In Calico," and "Lassus Trombone."
